Three more people appeared in the Durban Magistrate Court on Monday to answer charges of inciting the riots that rocked South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces in July 2021 following the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.
The three joined 22 rioters who appeared at the same court on Friday to answer charges of conspiracy to commit public violence, incitement to commit arson related to the acts of looting, and public violence that took place in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng some 13 months ago.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KwaZulu-Natal provincial spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said bail for the three rioters was set at US$200 each.
They remain in custody but without a plea, she said, adding that the matter was remanded to August 26 for further investigations.
The two-week rioting broke out in July 2021 after Zuma was given a 15-month sentence for ignoring a court order.
The rioting led to damage to both business and personal property worth over US$3 billion and the death of over 300 people.
Meanwhile, Zuma appeared at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein on Monday to appeal against a high court ruling which overturned his medical parole that allowed him to be released from his 15-month imprisonment.
