The ongoing attacks against black foreigners in neighbouring South Africa has seen eSwatini transport operators grounding their trucks for the past three days, APA learnt here on Wednesday.
Under normal circumstances, about 40 local trucks cross the borders into South Africa on a daily basis to transport various goods to and from the neighbouring country.
The eSwatini Truckers Association (ETA) said violence was a huge setback to its members due to the loss of business caused.
“We took heed of warnings issued by both the South African High Commission and our government that we should be careful and not place the lives of our drivers at risk,” ETA president Sihlangu Nhlabatsi said.
According to Nhlabatsi, a number of the association’s members “have escaped these violent attacks.”
He added that they were closely monitoring the situation and hoped it would normalize soon.
He said eSwatini’s Ministry of Labour and the South African government are currently engaged in discussions to find a lasting solution.
