The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched the GLONET Sahel project in Dakar, Senegal on the inauguration of its subregional office for the resilience of cross-border agropastoral populations to food crises, aligning responses to multiple vulnerabilities for the long term, APA reports.
As a result of cooperation between FAO and the European Union, the project is specifically aimed at contributing to the stabilization efforts of the Sahel priority zones, defined by the G5 Sahel, at the regional level including Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
“We are witnessing several conflicts related to pastoralism, but also between pastoralists and farmers, and this project that we have just launched is to address this problem by trying to curb as much as possible this crisis in the sub-region by building capacity actors in order to allow them to fulfill their activities without creating much conflict”, the coordinator of the FAO West Africa Sub-Regional Office, Dr Gouantoueu Robert Guei explained.
To this end, the program plans to improve current response mechanisms by strengthening the coordination of food security and nutrition analyses for more effective use of information; to propose improved programming tools, adapted to the context, to deal with complex emergencies and protracted crises and to mobilize actors in the humanitarian-development-peace nexus.
With a budget of 9 million euros, the GLONET Sahel project intends to assist 140,000 people in the next five years.
