Using this piece of legislation adopted in April 2023, the Burkinabe authorities have sent several citizens to the front.
The government has adopted a new decree extending the period of general conscription and warning, according to the minutes of the Council of Ministers meeting held on Wednesday.
“The adoption of this decree extends the period of general mobilisation and warning by 12 months, from 19 April 2024,” states the transitional government.
It adds that this legal provision aims to “continue the mobilisation of resources, restore security and ensure the protection of the population and their property against the threat and actions of terrorists.”
In April 2023, Captain Ibrahim Traore decreed mobilisation “in view of the prevailing security situation on national territory,” for a period of 12 months.
“This period of general mobilisation and warning expires on 18 April 2024, hence the need to extend it in order to consolidate the gains made and continue the fight against terrorism in our country,” explains the government.
A number of human rights organisations have denounced this measure as a way of “silencing dissenting voices.”
In the name of this law adopted in April 2023, the authorities have sent several citizens to the front line in the fight against armed groups.
