In a joint operation, the Sierra Leone Security Sector conducted a thorough search of an abandoned vessel found on the coast of the country.
The discovery, which took place on January 18, 2025, has sparked public interest and raised concerns about potential security threats.
According to a press release issued by the Sierra Leone Police Headquarters, the Security Sector received a tip-off about an unusual vessel sighted along the Black Johnson coastal area. A team from the Naval Wing was immediately dispatched to the location, where they discovered a vessel resembling a customized mini-submarine at the Yenkain Beach in the Black Johnson community. The vessel was secured and subsequently towed to the Murray Town Navy Base for further investigation.
On January 19, 2025, a joint search operation was conducted by personnel from various security sector institutions at the Murray Town Navy Base. The search, which lasted from 0900 to 1100 hours, involved a thorough examination of the vessel’s three major compartments, including the captain’s cabin and other areas.
Despite a rigorous search of all compartments in the presence of stakeholders, nothing of security interest was found within the vessel. The vessel was then handed over to the Marine Wing of the Sierra Leone Police for further investigation. Swabs were collected from the vessel for forensic analysis to aid in the ongoing investigation.
