The national navies of Senegal and Mauritania carried out a joint operation on 23 and 24 August, the Senegalese navy announced on its X account (formerly Twitter) on 28 August.
The operation, dubbed MUSTARAKA, was described as an “operational cooperation activity” (ACO) aimed at addressing “common maritime challenges” faced by the two countries. The operation took place “in the full depth of the maritime border zone” between Senegal and Mauritania.
This cooperation is part of efforts to secure the territorial waters of the two West African countries.
The official release did not provide specific details on the exact nature of the activities carried out or the resources deployed.
However, images accompanying the release show naval personnel from both countries waving their flags.
The announcement comes against the context of a maritime security following a growing concern for West African coastal states.
