The Senegalese authorities have denied information circulating on social media suggesting restrictions at the Senegal-Mali border.
In a press release from the General Directorate of the National Police sent to APA, they stated that these rumors are “without any foundation”.
It specifies that no measures to restrict or close the borders have been taken to date by the competent authorities.
The national police emphasises that it ensures the strict application of the laws governing the movement of people, in accordance with the protocol of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
It also states that the use of the ECOWAS biometric identity card remains mandatory for mobility within the community area.
While reaffirming its commitment to regional integration and traditions of hospitality, Senegal continues to demonstrate flexibility in the entry modalities into its territory for nationals of countries in the sub-region, particularly those from states with which it shares a border.
Although announced by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger in January 2024, the “immediate” withdrawal from ECOWAS of these three countries that created the Confederation of Sahel States (ESA) has not taken effect.
In accordance with the revised ECOWAS Treaty, a period of one year is required for the withdrawal to become officially applicable.
