On Monday night, 189 migrants, primarily from Gambia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Mali, and Guinea, were apprehended while attempting to reach Europe. The following night, another 213 migrants, mainly Guineans, were intercepted over 200 kilometers from Saint-Louis.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenge of irregular migration from West Africa. Despite a change in government earlier this year, the perilous journey remains a desperate option for many seeking better opportunities abroad.
Tragically, a separate incident off the coast of Nouakchott, Mauritania, resulted in the deaths of at least 25 migrants when their pirogue capsized. Over 100 survivors were rescued.
The Senegalese navy has been working tirelessly to curb the flow of migrants, but the problem persists.
