The Senegalese authorities have launched an investigation into an alleged act of corruption involving a police officer, reported by a member of parliament close to the government.
The Ministry of the Interior and Public Security announced on Thursday 12 September that an investigation had been launched following a report of an alleged act of corruption involving a police officer in Dakar.
Pro-government MP Guy Marius Sagna reported the incident on his Facebook page, claiming that a policeman had accepted a bribe from a taxi driver and provided the vehicle’s registration number.
MP Sagna posted details on his Facebook page of how the policeman on the Émergence bridge, allegedly stopped the taxi to check its documents before receiving money from the driver and did not issue the purported offender a ticket.
He criticised the persistence of such practices, pointing to their consequences in terms of road accidents and other social problems such as irregular emigration.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to fighting corruption and encouraged citizens to report such acts through its special hotline.
The authorities said they were working to identify those responsible and apply the necessary sanctions.
