APA-Dakar (Senegal) The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) denies having taken any measures against non-member states of the Economic Community of West African States.
In a recent publication dated Monday February 5, 2024, certain media reported an alleged decision by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) concerning a significant change in economic, commercial and financial relations with Mali, following the exit of the countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) from Ecowas. According to the article, the financial institution has announced its intention to modify community texts against these states.
In a press release issued on Thursday February 8, 2024, BCEAO formally denied “these unfounded allegations.” The institution reaffirms that it is the joint issuing institution of the eight member states of the West African Monetary Union (UEMOA), and that it has not taken any steps to modify the economic, commercial and financial relations or community texts of ECOWAS.
BCEAO wishes to emphasize the importance of referring only to the institution’s official communication channels. It points out that all its press releases are published on its official website www.bceao.int.
Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have withdrawn from ECOWAS, criticizing the regional organization for being under the thumb of foreign powers.
