Instead, the Senegalese government asserts that it took the initiative to end the agreements to protect its own fishing industry.
The clarification came from both political and official channels. Minister for Higher Education Abdourahmane Diouf stated during a political rally that Senegal had proactively decided not to renew the agreements, deeming them unfavorable to local fishermen.
Minister of Fisheries and Maritime and Port Infrastructures Fatou Diouf further elaborated on the government’s stance. She emphasized that the decision to end the agreements was made to allow for a comprehensive assessment of the country’s fisheries resources and to ensure sustainable management.
The EU had previously cited concerns about illegal fishing practices in its decision to suspend the agreements. However, the Senegalese government maintains that it has taken steps to address these issues and protect its marine resources.
As the country prepares for parliamentary elections, the government plans to provide further details on its fisheries policy and its stance on future agreements with the EU.
