The Hydraulics and Sanitation ministry in Dakar has issued a warning on the imminent risk of the Senegal River bursting its banks.
According to the Ministry of Hydraulics’ press release received by APA, “the water level in Bakel, which was 9.52 meters at 08:00, rose to 9.57 meters at 12:00, just 43 centimeters from the alert level of 10 meters.”
This rapid rise in water levels is a cause for concern for the authorities.
The ministry warns that “if the current rainfall trend continues, the critical threshold could be reached in the next few hours. The possible consequences are alarming, including “the overflowing of the river in places, especially on the Bakel-Matam axis” (northeast).
Faced with this situation, the ministry “invites the people living along the banks of the Senegal River and those engaged in activities along the observed route […] to be as vigilant as possible and to take all the necessary measures to prevent any damage”.
The Senegalese authorities assure the public that “due diligence” will be exercised by the state, but stress the importance of vigilance and preparation by the local population in the face of this growing threat.
