The first round of the Senegalese presidential election will take place on February 25, 2024, the Ministry of the Interior announced.
In a statement released on Thursday, Interior Minister Antoine Felix Abdoulaye Diome “informs Senegalese citizens and political actors that the date of the next presidential election is set for Sunday, February 25, 2024 by Decree No. 2023-339 dated February 16, 2023.
Several party leaders have already declared that they would run for president, but as in 2019, they will first have to pass the sponsorship stage in the hands of citizens.
Any candidate for the presidency must collect the signatures of between 0.8 percent and 1 percent of the electorate.
These signatures must be obtained in at least seven of the 14 regions of Senegal, with a minimum of 2,000 sponsorships each.
Outgoing president Macky Sall had won the 2019 presidential election in the first round with 58.27 percent of the vote.
