APA-Dakar (Senegal) – The Senegalese authorities want to establish a comprehensive understanding of the land situation in the most sensitive geographical areas of the country.
In Senegal, a long-awaited move by a large section of the population has finally been realised by the authorities. The land issue, the source of many disputes and conflicts between residents, has been a central concern of the country’s various regimes. To remedy this situation, the new government has decided to temporarily suspend the inspection of land files in certain towns.
This decision was confirmed by businessman Pierre Goudiaby Atepa on Sunday during the “Point de Vue” programme on national television. The government has ordered a halt to all construction along the coastline,
on both the western and eastern cornices of Dakar. Pierre Goudiaby Atepa, a fervent defender of the coastline, welcomed this measure taken by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
Alongside Mr. Goudiaby, many Senegalese citizens have mobilised in their communities to protect their farmland from appropriation by wealthy investors, and to prevent private construction on the national maritime domain.
These actions have given rise to associations whose efforts seem to be beginning to bear fruit.
In addition to localities in the Dakar region, land areas in the Thies and Saint-Louis regions are also affected by this measure, according to our sources.
The new authorities, focused on accountability and transparency, are seeking to draw up a complete inventory of the land situation in the most sensitive areas before lifting the suspension.
Their aim is to avoid any threat to social peace from ongoing or future conflicts.
