Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a circular imposing new vehicle control measures and tightening penalties for traffic violations, pending the conclusions of the Transport General Conference.
The Senegalese government is strengthening road safety measures with a series of new provisions for immediate application, according to the circular.
Among the key measures is the mandatory registration of all motorcycles over 49cc, with a three-month grace period for the regularisation of two-wheelers already in circulation.
The text also provides for tougher controls on heavy vehicles, with a maximum tolerance of 15 percent on authorised loads and a height limit of 4.5 metres.
Platforms generating more than 100,000 tons of annual freight would have to be equipped with weighbridges.
To combat road insecurity, the authorities have also decided to reactivate regional commissions for the withdrawal of driving licenses.
Defence and security forces are expected to systematically transmit the offenders’ permits to the regional commissions.
These provisions are part of the General Assembly of Public Transport, launched in May 2024 to reform the sector.
The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport is expected to present monthly reports on the application of these measures.
