The Senegalese media fraternity is in a state of shock following the physical attack on Maimouna Ndour Faye, director of 7TV television.
The events took place on Thursday night outside the journalist’s home, shortly after her interview with a politician.
According to witness statements from sources close to the victim, the assailant was waiting for Maimouna Ndour Faye outside her home.
Without warning, he stabbed her before dragging her several metres before ending his act of mindless violence.
Mamadou Awa Ndiaye, news presenter at 7TV, reported that the journalist’s life was not in danger according to initial medical assessments.
Nevertheless, the attack provoked a wave of indignation and unanimous condemnation.
Politicians, journalists and members of civil society unanimously described the act as “cowardly” and “despicable,” calling for the perpetrators to be identified and prosecuted.
On X (formerly Twitter), President Macky Sall “firmly” condemned the “cowardly” and “inexcusable” act of violence against the journalist.
“Freedom of the press is a fundamental right that must be protected and respected in all circumstances. No form of violence can be tolerated, and those responsible for this attack will have to answer for their actions before the courts. I would like to express my full support and reiterate my commitment to guaranteeing a safe and serene
environment for all media professionals in our country”, the Senegalese leader added.
An investigation into the incident has been opened.
