A non-registered MP Thierno Alassane Sall announced on Monday, February 17, 2025, the filing of a bill to repeal the March 2024 amnesty law.
This new parliamentary approach targets the amnesty law adopted on March 6, 2024 under the regime of former President Macky Sall. when his party held the majority in the National Assembly and are now in opposition.
The voting then was 94 deputies against 49 and 3 abstentions, covering criminal and correctional offences committed during political demonstrations between 2021 and 2024.
Deputy Thierno Alassane Sall, who will submit his text on Tuesday, February 18, believing that “the atrocities committed in Senegal in recent years fall into the category of crimes that cannot go unpunished.”
This initiative echoes the announcement by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who, on December 27, 2024, had already expressed his intention to repeal this amnesty law adopted by his former political opponents.
He had then specified that it was not a “witch hunt” but a question of “justice.”
The amnesty law of March 2024, presented by former Justice Minister Aissata Tall Sall, now president of the opposition parliamentary group, notably allowed for the release of several political prisoners, including Ousmane Sonko himself and Bassirou Diomaye Faye. It also provided for a compensation mechanism for victims of the protests.
