This marks a pivotal moment in the political landscape of Senegal.
Following the early legislative elections held on November 17, the 165 deputies elected will convene for the first time, as mandated by a presidential decree issued on November 28. This session comes in the wake of PASTEF’s decisive victory.
According to final results announced by the Constitutional Council, PASTEF has attained an absolute majority, winning 130 seats in the National Assembly, thereby granting the party, under Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, substantial influence over parliamentary activities.
The coalition Takku Wallu Senegal (Resolved to Save Senegal), which includes the Alliance for the Republic (APR) and the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) led by former President Macky Sall, secured 16 seats. Jam Ak Njerign (Peace and Prosperity), led by Amadou Ba, won 7 seats, while the coalition headed by Dakar Mayor Barthelemy Dias obtained 3 seats.
Additionally, Macky Sall announced his resignation from his parliamentary mandate in a message posted on social media on November 29, in line with a previous commitment. “As I previously stated, I will resign from my mandate as a member of parliament at the beginning of the next legislature in order to ensure legal consequences can be addressed,” he said.
The Constitutional Council emphasized the transparency and peaceful environment of the electoral process, bolstering Senegal’s reputation for democracy. The first session will provide the new majority an opportunity to initiate the implementation of its legislative priorities.
