Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye recently met with the Episcopal Conference of Senegal, led by Archbishop of Dakar Monsignor Benjamin Ndiaye. The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between the government and the Catholic Church in promoting social well-being and development within the country.
During the meeting, Archbishop Ndiaye presented the Church’s priorities for 2025 and discussed several important issues with the President. These included the ongoing land dispute in Ziguinchor, where the Church sought the government’s support in finding a resolution.
The upcoming General Assembly of Bishops of West Africa, scheduled for May in Senegal, was also discussed. The Church requested institutional support from the government to ensure the successful organization of this important regional event.
President Faye, in a social media post, noted that the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the activities of the ecclesiastical province of Dakar and explore avenues for enhanced collaboration between the government and the Catholic Church.
The meeting underscored the importance of the Church’s role in Senegalese society and highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering positive and productive relationships with religious institutions.
