Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to visit China next Tuesday to take part in the forthcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), scheduled for 5 and 6 September.
Other African leaders, including Assimi Goita of Mali will also attend the summit.
It will be the first trip to Asia by Senegal’s new president.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye said on Wednesday 28 August that he would be making a state visit to China on 3 and 4
September 2024.
The trip is part of the fourth summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), scheduled for September 5-6, 2024.
At the head for the past five months of a state that now wants to pursue a sovereign policy, the 44-year-old Senegalese leader will be attempting to strengthen diplomatic relations with the Asian giant, which rivals the United States for the position of the world’s leading economic power.
This edition of FOCAC will address the question of how to ‘join forces to promote modernisation and build a high-level China-Africa community of shared future’.
Discussions will focus on strengthening economic relations and the signing of cooperation agreements between China and African countries.
In addition to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the summit will be attended by other African leaders, including Colonel Assimi Goita, who rarely leaves Mali to travel abroad since coming to power in a coup in May 2021.
