Phase 1 of the well drilling operations on the Sangomar oil field, located 100 km south of Dakar, will start this week, according to a joint press release from Woodside and the Societé des Petroles du Senegal (PETROSEN) which reached APA on Monday.
It is a major step in the development of the oil industry in Senegal that has just been achieved. Indeed, after several months of delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the implementation of Phase 1 of the development of the Sangomar field will finally begin.
The two companies in charge of the exploitation of this oil field will start drilling the wells of Senegal’s first offshore oil development. “With the inception of the drilling campaign for the 23 development wells, we remain on track to produce the first barrel of oil in 2023,” said Woodside’s acting CEO, Meg O’Neill.
This drilling is the first step in the Phase 1 development of the Sangomar field. This will involve the installation of a self-contained Floating Production, Storage and Offloading unit (known as the Leopold Sedar Senghor FPSO) with a production capacity of approximately 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day, 23 subsea development wells and a subsea infrastructure network.
This work will be carried out by two vessels: the Ocean BlackRhino, which arrived in Senegalese waters on 8 July 2021, and the Ocean BlackHawk, which will arrive in mid-2022.
A fleet of three supply vessels and three helicopters will support the drilling ships by conveying materials, equipment and personnel for the campaign. The supply vessels will operate from the Senegal Supply Base (SSB) located at Mole 1 of the Autonomous Port of Dakar (PAD).
