This decision comes just one day after the parliamentary majority rejected a bill aimed at abolishing these two institutions.
President Faye, currently in China for the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, formalized these dismissals through a decree dated September 4, 2024. The announcement was made by Oumar Samba BA, Minister and Secretary General of the Presidency.
The dismissals occur amid a significant political crisis in Senegal. On September 2, the National Assembly, controlled by the Benno Bokk Yakaar coalition (BBY), which held power from 2012 to 2024, voted against President Faye’s proposed legislation to eliminate the CESE and HCCT. Additionally, the president of the BBY parliamentary group, Abdou Mbow, submitted a motion of censure against the government led by Ousmane Sonko the following day.
In response to the political turbulence, Ousmane Sonko, the Head of Government and leader of the PASTEF party, declared during a meeting with Prime Minister’s office staff on September 4 that there would be no motion of censure.
