On Monday 25 March, seven Chadian soldiers lost their lives and several others were wounded in an attack in the locality of Tchoukou Telia, in the province of Lake Chad.
According to the President of the Chadian Transition, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, on his social media platforms, the incident occurred during a patrol by the Defence and Security Forces, when their vehicle unfortunately set off a landmine.
Offering his condolences to the “families and loved ones of the deceased soldiers,” the Chadian head of state assured them that “their sacrifice will never be forgotten and will remain engraved in our nation’s memory.”
The Chadian President called on his compatriots to “remain united and resolute in the face of such acts of violence, and continue to support our armed forces in their mission to protect our nation and its citizens.”
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the area in which it occurred has seen a number of security incidents in recent years linked to the activities of Boko Haram and the splinter Islamic State in West Africa group.
In recent years, the Chadian army has lost dozens of soldiers.
