At least seven people have died from devastating floods in parts of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province as weather experts warn of more heavy rains in the region and the Western Cape on Tuesday.
According to local authorities, coastal towns north of the port city of Durban were hardest hit, with widespread structural, road, and infrastructure damage reported in several areas.
KwaZulu-Natal’s eThekwini metro, battered by heavy rains, strong winds and hail storms, was one of the most affected areas, with the impact extending beyond the deaths as homes, infrastructure and power lines also suffered extensive damage.
The eThekwini Municipality reported that scores of people have been left homeless by the floods and said its disaster teams are on standby as more rains are expected to affected more rains in coming days.
The South African Weather Service on Monday issued an alert for disruptive rains along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
Meanwhile, heavy rains flooded parts of Cape Town on Tuesday morning, forcing local authorities to close some roads for safety purposes.
City fathers advised residents to limit travelling to avoid being affected by the expected floods.
