APA – Kigali (Rwanda) – At least 130 businesses were asked to close and relocate after the popular artisanal market located in Gisozi, a hill overlooking Kigali city was gutted by fire earlier last week, a municipality authority confirmed Wednesday.
“We have decided to close several shops that are not meeting standards for safety reasons,” a senior municipality official in Kigali told APA speaking on condition of anonymity.
At least one person was killed earlier last week, after a section of the popular artisanal market located in Gisozi, was gutted by fire leaving several people sustained injuries varying degrees of burns.
In February this year, a fire broke out in the same popular market that deals in timber, furniture, carpentry, and other construction material.
Part of the affected section was previously burnt by a fire in August 2021 and investigations showed that it had resulted from a short circuit due to overloading and poor electrical installation.
