Dauda Kamara, who heads a private medical foundation, is wanted in connection to an alleged fraudulent deal with the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT). He was first invited for questioning in July last year in relation to the so-called NASSIT Sisimi project, a hospital construction project.
While under questioning at the ACC premises, the Commission claimed, Kamara fled to the United Kingdom where he was believed to have lived until he “surreptitiously” returned to the country and went into hiding.
The ACC in a statement said Kamara is believed to have returned to the country sometime in December, 2018 and remained in hiding in his father’s residence until he was detained on Wednesday as a result of an operation that followed months of surveillance on the compound.
The Commission said its agents who apprehended the fugitive acted on intelligence report. The ACC declared Kamara wanted after fleeing to UK and failed to assist with investigations on the matter for which a former NASSIT Director General and a former Chairperson of Board of Trustees of the
national pension fund are currently on trial.
The Commission said Mr. Kamara is very vital to the investigations as he was said to be one of two signatories to their company’s account.
“Appropriate actions will be taken at the end of the investigations, including ensuring that Mr. Kamara is accountable in the NASSIT Sisimi fraud and exemplary punishment for fleeing justice,” the ACC vowed in the statement signed by Director of Public Education and Outreach, Patrick Sandi.
“The Commission will deal with anyone who decides to flee or subvert the cause of justice for the people of Sierra Leone, or a section thereof,” it added. The trial on the NASSIT project is part of a series of investigations of former officials who served under ex-president Ernest Bai Koroma’s
administration between 2007 and 2018.
