The electricity crisis in Sierra Leone appears to have come to an end following almost a month of incessant power outages in Freetown and other cities, APA has learnt on Monday.
The blackout was caused by the non-payment of $48 million owed to the Turkish electricity provider Karpowership.
The national utility company over the weekend said $18 million of the outstanding arrears has been paid to end the power crisis which has prompted Kanja Sesay, the minister in charge of energy to resign.
Sesay took the blame for the situation which is now under the purview of the president’s office.
Karpowerhip which belongs to Turkey provides electricity to the Sierra Leonean capital through a grid stationed off Sierra Leone’s Atlantic coast.
During the protracted blackout, the energy supplier said it was cutting supplies due to the monies owed it by the national utility agency.
Many businesses, offices and hospitals in Freetown had been severely affected by the power outage which stretched for most daylight hours and well into the night.
