The week’s flooding in the Sierra Leonean capital, Freetown dominates Monday’s edition of the papers.
The death toll has since been updated to seven due to the flooding which affected parts of the city after heavy down pour on Friday. Some of the victims are from slum communities notorious for recurrent flooding, like Kroobay.
The story is captured notably on the Health, Calabash and Times newspapers. They all carry it as lead:
The Health says: ‘As flood hits Freetown… 7 confirmed dead.’ The story is accompanied with photo of the publisher of the paper, Sinneh Kamara, who is also a staff at the mortuary of Connaught, the main referral hospital in Freetown.
The Calabash goes: ‘7 die in flash flooding in Freetown.’
The Times says: ‘August 2nd flooding brings memories of August 14 August 2017… Another Mudslide imminent?’
Other stories of the day include the seizure of houses belonging to two former government officials by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The officials, both former ministers, are under investigation for suspected corrupt activities.
The story is notably carried by the New Age and Guardian Post newspapers. ‘SLPP embarks on 1960 property seizure game,’ screams the New Age.
