Monday’s edition of Sierra Leonean papers is dominated by three news items: the launch of the 2019 national awards called All Works Of Life (AWOL), the spat between two top officials in parliament and an imminent increment in tariff for electricity.
AWOL is a big but controversial annual ceremony that recognizes individuals and institutions that have done extremely well in their area of operations. This year’s edition was launched last week by Chief Minister Prof. David Francis.
The story is captured on the Calabash newspaper, News Watch and AYV newspapers.
Calabash leads with another headline story, a spat between clerk of parliament and a law maker which led to the invitation of both officials by the Anti-Corruption Commission for questioning. Their bitter exchange sparked speculations about corruption in the House of Representatives.
The same paper also carries the story on the planned increase in electricity tariff, an unpopular move that has left everyone talking.
‘AWOL unveils 2019 NA awards nominees,’ screams the News Watch newspaper.
The same paper also prominently carries a story on the arrest and detention of an “angry landlord” for murder.
‘Chief Minister launches AWOL 2019 awards,’ Salone times says in a front page second lead. It leads with a story on the struggling economy, headlined: ‘Depreciation of the Leone remains a concern for Salone people.’
‘Chief Minister launches AWOL 2019,’ says AYV in a front page banner headline.
‘EDSA to increase tariff in December,’ says Global Times as it’s front page lead. The same paper carries a smaller headline on ‘Immigratiin chief comforting ruling party supporters as he launched a weekly feeding programme in in the southern Bo district.
