The foundation stone for a future Somailand embassy was laid late last week in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Essa Kayd laid the foundation stone.
The move was taken as a significant step in strengthening diplomatic and bilateral relations between Somaliland and Ethiopia.
The land for the embassy was generously donated by the Ethiopian government, symbolising Ethiopia’s support and the deepening ties between the two nations.
This development underscores Somaliland’s continued efforts to enhance its international presence and foster stronger regional partnerships.
President Muse Bihi Abdi, did not make it to the ceremony in Addis Ababa.
The inscription reads “The Foundation stone of the Republic of Somaliland was laid by Issa Kayd MOFA on behalf of his Excellency Muuse Bihi Abdi, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 16 October 2024.”
Tension still remains high after Somaliland said it had agreed to lease land to Ethiopia for a naval facility on its coast in return for the latter’s recognition of its statehood.
Somaliland is a breakaway enclave of Somalia which is not recognised by the international community as a country.
Since the enclave’s port deal with Ethiopia in January, relations between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa have soured.
