Nigeria’s Women football team, the Super Falcons on Monday lost 1-2 to their South African counterparts, the Banyana Banyana.
The match, which was the opening match of Group C in the ongoing 12th Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, was balanced and entertaining.
The nine-time champions of the tournament was held to a goalless draw in the first half with the Nigerian side making impressive moves in the half.
At the resumption of the second half, Oshoala shot at goal in the 49th minute was saved by the South African goalkeeper, who was at her best in the match.
But the two attempts on goal by Banyana Banyana were converted, first in the 61st minute by Jemane Seoposenwe, while Hilda Magaia got the second in the 63rd minute to bring the score line to 2-0 in favour of South Africa.
With the two goals advantage, the South African team resorted to defensive tactics and kept off the rampaging Super Falcons who were searching for their opening goal from four attempts at goal.
However, Nigeria’s efforts to change the score line came in the 3-minute extra time with a goal by Rasheedat Ajibade at 90+2 to bring the score line to 2-1 in favour of the South African team.
The next match in Group C will be played on Monday between Burundi and Botswana.
