South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has launched an election registration campaign dubbed “Your Vote Is Your Voice” to encourage eligible voters to register online for next year’s national elections.
IEC deputy chief electoral officer Mawethu Mosery said on Monday that the campaign was the “beginning of the preparations for our 2024 general elections.”
“It comes after a year without any form of encouraging voters to go register in 2022 – except for those who already held by-elections,” Mosery said.
He added: “So we are encouraging voters, those registered and those not registered, and those who will be registering for the first time – the young voters – to take the opportunity for the next three weeks to register online.”
South Africans are due to vote for members of the National Assembly in polls set for mid-2024, with leader of the party that gets the highest number of votes expected to become president.
