Following the proclamation final electoral results by the Constitutional Council of Mozambique, South Africa has noted with concern the ongoing violence and the subsequent disruptive protest in reaction to the announcement.
Frelimo’s Daniel Chapo was declared the winner of the 9th October 2024 election which the opposition claim was rigged in favour of the ruling party.
In a statement on Tuesday South Africa urged all parties to the crisis to commit to an urgent dialogue that will heal the country and set it on a new political and developmental trajectory.
Pretoria said it will assist Mozambique in any manner to facilitate this dialogue.
The South African government will continue working with the Southern Africa Development Community and other multilateral agencies in supporting a lasting solution to the current impasse.
There is tension in Mozambique where the opposition candidate, Venâncio Mondlane is disputing the election results and vowed to install himself as president on 15 January.
The candidate of the ruling Frelimo which has been in power in Mozambique since 1975 was declared the winner of the polls, sparking wildcat protests by opposition supporters.
Protesters on Tuesday reduced the capital Maputo to a ghost town on Christmas Eve as public facilities are destroyed.
21 people have been killed in the unrest according to the government.
People are spending Christmas huddled inside their homes in anticipation of further trouble.
