South African police have launched a manhunt after 17 people were killed in a mass shooting on Friday night in the remote town of Lusikisiki in Eastern Cape province.
According to the police, the shooting targeted two homesteads on the same street in Nyathi village, Ngobozana.
At one location, 12 women and one man were killed, while at a second site, three women and one man lost their lives. An 18th victim is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.
According to media reports, the victims were relatives and neighbours who had gathered to prepare for a traditional mourning ceremony for a mother and daughter who were murdered last year.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is expected to visit the area to meet with local officials and assess the situation.
