APA-Durban (South Africa) More than 100 houses were destroyed after a storm lashed KwaZulu-Natal province and left at least four people dead on Sunday.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, the heavy rains, which were accompanied by strong winds, hit several parts of the province, leaving scores of families homeless and at least four people dead in Mtubatuba district.
The storm tore roofs off houses and caused damage to power cables, roads, bridges and vehicles, the provincial authorities said in a statement.
“Community halls and churches have opened their doors to the public, while others have sought alternative accommodation with relatives,” the statement said.
Other areas affected included the Greater Kokstad Municipality in Harry Gwala district, Umzimkhulu municipality and Ulundi in Zululand Municipality where several households have been left homeless since the thunderstorm started on Saturday night.
