A protest rally is set to take place on Thursday, led by the Sudanese Professional Association, which has organized three rallies in recent months to bring pressure on Bashir to quit after 30 years in power.
The SPA says over 15 areas in the capital Khartoum and its twin cities of Bahrey and Omdurman will be launching pads for the protests that will also coinciden with International women’s Day.
The call for more protests comes amidst an ongoing national state of emergency and presidential decrees banning rallies and gatherings in a bid by beleaguered Bashir to tackle growing protests, the biggest challenge to his 30-year rule.
So-called bread and butter protests began in December in River Nile State following a surprise increase in the price of basic foodstuffs.
It quickly spread to other states with protesters demanding an end to Bashir’s rule.
According to human rights groups, over 50 people have been killed in an ensuing crackdown by security forces accused of using excessive force to break up demonstrations.
