Food and equipment storage sites in El Fasher, in the Sudanese region of Darfur, have been attacked and looted by armed groups active in the area.
On 28 December, a World Food Programme (WFP) facility was ransacked, according to the United Nations (UN).
It was the latest in a long line of attacks on the deployment of humanitarian aid in Sudan.
On that day, the attackers took away nearly 2,000 tons of food that should have fed 730,000 vulnerable people for a month, the spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement seen by APA on Thursday.
Deploring this situation, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called on the Sudanese government to restore order and ensure that the assets that belonged to the former United Nations and African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) are used strictly for civilian purposes, in accordance with the Framework Agreement that the government signed with the United Nations in March this year.
In addition, he called on the Sudanese authorities to ensure the security of the remaining UN humanitarian operations in El Fasher, expressing his gratitude to the UN civilian and uniformed personnel who have remained on the ground in these difficult circumstances.
UNAMID officially ended its operations on 31 December 2020, after 13 years in the western region of Sudan.
