The Malian army announced the arrest of three European nationals suspected of carrying out terrorist activities.
The suspects were arrested in Diabaly, some 300 km northwest of Bamako, according to an army statement issued on Tuesday.
They were arrested in central Mali during operations against jihadists.
“The Malian Armed Forces detachment in Diabaly arrested five suspects on April 10, 2022, including three European nationals,” the military general staff said.
However, the statement did not specify the identity of the European suspects.
Accused of having recently carried out violations against civilians in Moura (center), the Malian army rejected these allegations, but confirmed once again it is “gaining the upper hand over terrorists in disarray and whose strength of nuisance is based essentially on the laying of improvised explosive devices.”
Since August 2020, Mali has been led by a military junta that asserts that its objective is to create the security conditions for the regaining of its territorial integrity.
But since January, the country has cut itself off from several of its partners, including ECOWAS member countries.
The regional grouping is imposing an embargo to force the military authorities to quickly hand over power to civilians.
