South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) is on Monday expected to announce results of elections held at the weekend to choose the party’s top leadership.
In elections held on the third day of the ANC 55th national elective conference on Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa contested against former health minister Zweli Mkhize for the ANC presidency.
The winner between the two would be the party’s presidential candidate in South Africa’s next general elections set for 2024.
Mkhize has mounted a vicious campaign to wrestle the ANC presidency from Ramaphosa who is facing a backlash from a scandal in which a stash of undeclared US dollars was stolen from his farm.
Although the robbery occurred in February 2020, the South African leader is accused of trying to cover up the incident since it would have exposed him for holding large sums of undeclared funds in his house.
Other positions being contested at the five-day ANC conference are for deputy president, chairperson, secretary general, first secretary general, second secretary general and treasurer general.
The elections have, however, been rocked by allegations of massive vote-buying, with some of the candidates accused of dolling out large sums of money to secure votes from the more than 4,000 delegates attending the elective conference.
