Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation Peter Eriksson is expected in Mozambique on Wednesday at the start of a two-day visit aimed at deepening relations between the two countries.
According to a statement from Mozambique’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Eriksson is expected to hold talks with government officials and multilateral actors as well as visit the port city of Beira to learn about humanitarian and reconstruction work being carried out after Cyclone Idai.
The ministry said environment issues and the strengthening of resilience to natural disasters will be among the main focus of Eriksson’s visit to Beira.
Sweden is a long-standing partner in Mozambique and currently supports humanitarian and reconstruction efforts in the central region of the country.
“In addition to the $10 million made available for humanitarian work, Sweden intends to contribute an additional $15.5 million this year for post-cyclone reconstruction, and for social protection systems,” the statement said.
The additional Swedish support is earmarked for rapid recovery, resilient agriculture, rehabilitation of hydroelectric power stations and social protection systems for groups that are vulnerable to cyclones, the statement said.
