Elected for a four year-term, MPs of Benin’s eighth legislature took office at the end of a ceremony chaired by the Office of the most senior officials of the new National Assembly, in accordance with Article 6 of procedural rules.

The legislative elections held last Sunday in Benin had a turnout rate of 27.12 percent for a total estimated 4,992,399 registered voters, announced the Constitutional Court, which also confirmed the victory of the Progressive Union with 47 seats out of 83 seats at stake.

The Bishops of Benin, in a message addressed on Tuesday to the Christian community and the people of Benin, called for “inclusive legislative elections,” stressing that they can only be held through the involvement of “each other” in preserving “peace and national unity at all cost.”

Benin’s opposition leaders, whose candidacy applications for the legislative elections were rejected by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENA) staged a peaceful demonstration on Monday in Cotonou to demand “all-inclusive elections,”.
