Police have arrested an unnamed 27-year-old man after he allegedly broke into South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) offices in Bloemfontein, APA learnt on Monday.
Spokesperson for the crack police unit, the Hawks, Thandi Mbambo said the incident took place on Sunday.
“It is alleged that at about 4.30am (0230 GMT), a security officer at the Bloemfontein SABC building noticed that there was an intruder inside the building and requested backup,” Mbambo said.
She said officers were investigating the case of business burglary, trespassing, malicious damage to property and intimidation following the arrest of the man on the Bloemfontein SABC premises.
She said the man also allegedly attacked security officials, prompting one official to pull out his service firearm and shoot the suspect.
Mbambo said Parkweg police and emergency services were called to the scene. The suspect was taken to the local hospital for treatment, where he is currently under police guard, she said.
Several suspicious parcels were seized from the suspect following the involvement of the Hawks and the police bomb squad unit.
