Thousands of South Africans have so far signed a petition calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to dismiss underperforming members of his cabinet, APA observed here on Monday.
As of 10am (0800 GMT) on Monday, some 6,650 people had signed the “CabinetMustGo” petition that was started by the main opposition Democratic Alliance last week.
The petitioners want Ramaphosa to fire his ministers for failing to address the rolling electricity blackouts, high crime rate, jobs crisis, rising fuel price increases, corruption “and everything in-between.”
They are seeking a total of 20,000 signatures before taking the petition to parliament “to remove President Ramaphosa’s cabinet.”
The petition is part of grand scheme in which the DA has also sponsored a motion of no-confidence in the cabinet which will be debated and voted on in parliament on March 30.
If the motion succeeds, the cabinet, except Ramaphosa, would have to be dissolved and a new one put in place.
There is a separate motion on the same day, also sponsored by the DA, to have Ramaphosa himself removed from power for failing to provide effective leadership that would steer the country out of current challenges such as corruption, poor service delivery and high crime rate.
