An earthquake hit parts of South Africa’s Johannesburg on Tuesday night, causing widespread concern but resulting in no reported injuries or damage.
City of Johannesburg’s emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the tremor was felt just before 9pm local time (1900 GMT) in southern parts of Johannesburg, including Soweto, Roodepoort and surrounding areas.
“At this stage, no injuries or damages have been reported,” Mulaudzi said.
The Council for Geoscience is currently working to confirm the magnitude of the tremor on the Richter Scale.
The area is prone to earthquakes, with similar tremors having hit Johannesburg south in February, June and July this year alone.
Geology experts attribute the frequent tremors in Johannesburg to mining activities – legal or illegal – in the area.
