APA-Windhoek (Namibia) Zimbabwean judge Rita Makarau has been appointed acting judge of the Supreme Court of Namibia, joining her compatriot Moses Chinhengo who has been serving as acting judge of the Namibian High Court since September 2022.
In a statement late Wednesday, the Namibia’s Judicial Service Commission said President Hage Geingob has approved the appointment of Makarau who would serve in that capacity from 1 April to 31 March 2024.
Makarau is currently sits on Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court bench and has previously served as judge of the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe and as judge president of the High Court.
Between 2013 and 2017 she was chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, which has been accused of failing to run credible elections in the southern African country that has had a recent history of post-election violence.
The JSC also announced that Geingob has appointed another Zimbabwean Moses Chinhengo as “an acting Judge of the High Court for the period 18 September 2023 to 31 December 2023.”
Chinhengo is a retired Judge of the High Court of Zimbabwe and formerly of the High Court of Botswana.
He currently serves as an acting judge of the Court of Appeal of the Kingdom of Lesotho.
He previously served as an acting judge of the Supreme Court of Namibia between February and December 2021.
