Ugandan President Yoweli Kaguta Museveni has appointed retired Major General Robert Rusoke as new Ambassador to Rwanda, local media reported Sunday quoting official correspondences in Kampala.
Prior to being appointed as Ugandan High commissioner to Rwanda, Maj. Gen. Rusoke also served as Uganda’s Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan since 2012.
He also occupied the position of the Joint Chief of Staff of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) between 2005 and 2012.
In May this year, Ugandan President also received the newly appointed High Commissioner of Rwanda to Entebbe, Ambassador Colonel Joseph Rutabana amid diplomatic row between the two neighboring countries.
In February 2019, Rwanda partially closed its common border with Uganda, and issued a travel advisory to its citizens against traveling to Uganda.
The standoff escalated dramatically in March when Rwanda publicly accused Uganda of abducting its citizens and supporting rebels bent on overthrowing the government.
The political tensions have hardly been addressed during several regional meetings, raising concerns about the ability of regional and bilateral mechanisms to resolve emerging security challenges in the region.
Rwanda says that its complaints against Uganda have been presented directly by President Kagame to President Museveni at two previous meetings.
