The tragic mauling of the Colombian researcher by an elephant in Uganda comes two months after the death of a Saudi man killed in similar fashion during a safari.
Kibale National Park, western Uganda was the scene of the rare incident.
Sebastian Ramirez Amaya, a researcher based at Arizona State University in the United States, lost his life while conducting research.
In January, a Saudi man who won a safari trip was killed by an elephant in Murchison Falls Park.
“They (the group) came upon a lone elephant that charged them, forcing them to run in different directions. The elephant chased Sebastian and trampled him, resulting in his death,” Ugandan authorities said in a statement.
It was unprecedented at the park that has not experienced such an incident in the last 50 years of forestry research, the statement added.
Often known for its wildlife, the Kibale National Park is known for its chimpanzees.
In addition to primates, there are about 60 mammal species including African forest elephants.
