The defense team of Dominic Ongwen the former leader of Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army is expected to conclude its submission at the International Criminal Court (ICC)in October this year.
Ongwen, who was formally charged by the ICC in February 2017 is battling 70 counts of sexual and gender-based violence, war crimes and crimes against humanity for crimes committed in northern Uganda.
So far Ongwen’s defence team has presented 26 defense witnesses and has other 62 witnesses still lined up.
According to the ICC, Ongwen’s Defense led by Crispus Ayena Odongo is expected to conclude its submission in October this year, before the judgment.
While addressing the media in Kampala Maria Mabinty Kamara, the ICC Outreach Officer in Uganda, said the estimation of the conclusion of the defense case, before the outcome can be decided in October this year.
After the submission of the Defense, it is expected that the ICC judges will use about 60 days to look at the submissions of the defense, prosecution and victims before it can come out with a judgment.
