Struggling with limited access to clean water, many communities rely on unsafe sources, putting them at risk of waterborne diseases.
SLB, a global technology company with a presence in Uganda, is stepping up to make a difference. Partnering with local authorities and community members, they’ve launched a water stewardship project targeting eight villages across the district.
Buliisa District is home to over 120,000 people, but access to clean water varies greatly. While some areas enjoy a 95% access rate, others face a critical shortage, with rates as low as 19%. Residents are often forced to travel long distances to collect water, a burden that falls heavily on women and children.
SLB’s project focuses on two key areas: repairing existing boreholes and constructing new ones in critical locations. This will significantly improve water accessibility for residents. Additionally, the project will invest in simple and sustainable water purification technologies to ensure the safety of the water supply.
The long-term success of this initiative hinges on collaboration. SLB is working closely with community stakeholders to implement innovative monitoring and maintenance systems. This, coupled with educational programs on water conservation and hygiene practices, will empower residents to take ownership of their water resources.
SLB’s commitment extends beyond infrastructure. They are establishing water and sanitation committees and self-help groups to foster a sense of stewardship within the community. By empowering residents to manage their water resources effectively, the project aims to ensure long-term access to safe and clean water for all.
This initiative aligns with SLB’s dedication to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. By working together, SLB and the Buliisa community are creating a brighter, healthier future for generations to come.
