Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has fired his military spy chief Maj.Gen Abel Kandiho and sent him to neighboring South Sudan as envoy, reports say quoting authoritative sources in Kampala.
Maj. Gen.James Burungi has been appointed to head of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), reports said.
The new appointment comes a few days after the first son of President Museveni who is also Commander of Land Forces, Lt. Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba met Rwandan President Paul Kagame last weekend, to discuss a wide range of issues, including relations between the two countries.
Talks between Kagame and Keinerugaba could have led to Kandiho’s exit from the prestigious spy chief docket in Uganda, analysts say.
The visit comes at a time Rwanda and Uganda remain at loggerheads after almost four years of strained relations despite diplomatic efforts to resolve their differences.
A tweet then from Rwanda’s presidency said the pair had had “cordial, productive and forward looking discussions about Rwanda’s concerns and practical steps needed to restore the relationship between Rwanda and Uganda”.
Kainerugaba tweeted: “We held very cordial and in-depth discussions about how to improve our bilateral relations”.
